Teach Your Monster to Read: First Steps
Teach Your Monster to Read: First Steps is a game which helps children to practise the essential first stages of reading. The game aims to be the first on the market to combine real educational rigour with top quality games design, sound and graphics. It was developed as part of a groundbreaking, two year collaboration between Roehampton University and leading games designers and producers. It is based on the principles of synthetic phonics. In the game, children adopt and customise a monster and go on a fantastic adventure through a magical world, collecting letter sounds (and increasing speed and accuracy of letter recognition) along the way. The game also explores blending and segmenting, and introduces “tricky” words in a fun, interactive setting. The game was funded by the The Usborne Foundation, a charitable fund supporting initiatives to develop early literacy. The web-based (non-tablet) version of the game has already been played over 2 million times and has received rave reviews from teachers and the education press (see teachyourmonstertoread.com/reviews).
